Readers will notice major changes in this second issue of ABR for 2001. The cover looks notably different, courtesy of Chong, Text Publishing’s inimitable designer. I was delighted when Chong offered to redesign our cover. Our changed masthead seems sensible, for the magazine is known widely as ABR, after all. Readers can expect more design changes in coming issues.

Equally exciting was the recent acceptance by The National Gallery of Victoria of my proposal for a partnership between ABR and the NGV. This will give ABR access to the NGV’s superb photographic collections, works from which will appear on our front covers throughout 2001. In this issue, Isobel Crombie, senior curator of photography at the NGV, writes about this most welcome development.

Fittingly, our first cover together reproduces a work by the late Athol Shmith, a photographer whose oeuvre is impressively represented in the NGV’s photographic collections. Germane too is the choice of photograph for this April issue, which includes several pieces on the theme of expatriation. Athol Shmith’s famous photograph of Patricia Shmith, now the Countess of Harewood, complements the diary that she has written this month – one of two in this issue. From time to time, both Patricia Harewood and Jill Kitson will contribute to this polyphonic series of diaries.

Aviva Tuffield joins us in April as assistant editor. Aviva comes to ABR from Pearson Education, where she is an editor. Aviva’s editorial stamp is already apparent in ABR, for she has been of great assistance during recent months. Aviva is also a valued contributor. Last year, she won ABR’s inaugural non-fiction reviewing award. She has a further review in this issue.

The results of the national short story competition conducted late last year will be published shortly. We are grateful for the forbearance of all those writers who entered this competition.

 Peter Rose.
