Illustration from Everything is Teeth by Evie Wyld and Joe Sumner Steven Spielberg’s Jaws (1975) looms large in the narrative, and the panels where Sumner recreates scenes in his own inimitable style are a brilliant and satisfying homage for any fan of the movie. His drawing throughout treads a comic and surreal line that renders the story all the more emotionally complex.
Everything Is Teeth is not so much about Wyld as it first appears. The emboldening of her shy brother via the surf and her father’s struggle to adapt to the heat and space of Australia form tender, recognisable portraits. Her brief, explanatory sentences are a reminder that she possesses a rare and wistful talent that is somehow still grounded in reality. The powerful image of her father staring out from the verandah, for example, captures the tone perfectly. His mind is as unknowable as the sharks that haunt her daydreams.
